Welcome to The Wire

A monthly update from Reach Capital on the frontier of learning, health, and work. News from our team and portfolio companies, where we’re going, and who’s hiring.

We’re hiring an AI Investor!

This is a rare opportunity for a technical builder — engineer, researcher, data scientist, or technical PM — who has shipped AI/ML systems and is ready to help shape what gets built next. You’ll step into a core investing role (not in-house engineering), working across sourcing, technical diligence, and portfolio support at a firm that has backed category-defining AI companies like Replit, GPTZero, Handshake, Gradescope, and Mathpix.

At Reach, we believe AI can meaningfully expand opportunity for learners, patients, and workers — and we’re looking for someone who is product-obsessed, deeply technical, and excited to partner with mission-powered founders at the earliest stages. If you’re ready to pair hands-on AI experience with venture investing at a tight-knit, long-tenured team, we’d love to meet you.

K-12 districts may lose between 3M to 6.5M students by 2050.

The Stats Testing Our Social Institutions

Three years after Jennifer Carolan shared the “5 stats shaping her investment theses” in 2023, the world hasn’t returned to pre-pandemic normal. Some disruptive trends are accelerating, such as student enrollment declines and teen loneliness. Yet as traditional institutions face mounting strain, new opportunities are emerging to build more personalized, resilient systems. Here’s how the data is trending and where we’re investing next.

Voice Biomarkers: The Next Health Frontier

Your voice might reveal you’re sick before your bloodwork does. Researchers are finding that voice can predict menopause early, detect Parkinson's up to a decade before symptoms show, and even identify diabetes with increasing accuracy. As a health indicator, it’s also non-invasive and something we use naturally every day. Jomayra Herrera explores exciting opportunities for healthcare founders building at the frontier of voice AI.

Fortune 500 Powers for Main Street

For years, venture-scale SMB software seemed impossible: small deal sizes, fragmented customers, messy distribution. But AI is flipping the economics — turning expensive professional services (marketing, finance, ops) into affordable, on-demand expertise. That unlocks a massive new market of small businesses that previously couldn’t pay for help. Enzo Cavalie breaks down where the SMB economy is headed and where we’re investing.

Cashmere

As people increasingly turn to AI for answers, publishers risk losing control over how their work is accessed, cited, and compensated. On the other hand, AI companies don’t want to wrestle with a smorgasbord of one-off integrations and licensing arrangements.

Cashmere is building the infrastructure layer for content management and monetization in the AI era. We’re excited to lead its $5M seed round, alongside partners Pearson Ventures, Ingram Content Group, and Naver. Cashmere is building a neutral, API-first control layer that lets publishers define exactly how it can be used and monetized, and make it available to AI products in a rights-cleared, metered way.

Clair

Hormones shape fertility, mood, energy, and long-term health. Yet tracking them today usually requires invasive testing and episodic doctor’s visits.

Clair is building the first continuous, non-invasive hormone monitor, and we’re excited to co-lead their pre-seed investment alongside a16z speedrun. Its forthcoming consumer wearable captures over 130 biomarkers (across respiratory, acoustic, cardiovascular and other domains) to infer hormonal health and help women take charge of their wellbeing. This FAQ explains how it works in more detail.

Follow-on rounds

Cartwheel, the nation’s largest mental health partner for K-12 schools serving 350 districts across 15 states, raised their Series B led by A-Street. We first invested in 2023 and are excited to join this round, alongside the American Heart Association, Citi Impact Fund, Menlo Ventures, and General Catalyst. The company is currently hiring for a Senior Product Manager.

Take2 AI, which builds AI agents for healthcare recruiting, raised a $14M Series A led by Human Capital, with participation from Reach (we first invested in their 2024 pre-seed), SemperVirens VC, and Bertelsmann Healthcare Investments. Trained on healthcare hiring data, its platform is helping healthcare organizations assess candidates more accurately and generate insights that improve hiring quality and long-term retention. Take2 is hiring across engineering and growth roles.

Preply, the leading global language learning marketplace, raised a $150M Series D led by WestCap. The platform connects more than 100,000 tutors with learners across 180 countries and over 90 languages, exemplifying how human expertise combined with AI technology can help people achieve their goals. Reach first invested in 2023.

Complex AI Deployments Breakfast at Reach NYC

Last month at our NYC office, we co-hosted with Flybridge Capital a breakfast conversation on AI deployments and what it takes to make complex implementations work. One takeaway: the best forward-deployed engineers aren’t just implementers; they’re effectively the CEOs and CTOs who own the problem, ship fast, and then translate bespoke wins back into scalable products. Read the recap to see what else we discussed.

Where we’re going:

  • Upfront Summit | Feb 25

  • MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference | Mar 6
