Welcome to The Wire
Welcome to The Wire. Each month, we’ll deliver fresh insights into the world of learning, health, and work — combining news and data we’re tracking, perspectives from our team, and updates from our portfolio.
What did we find at Founders’ Day? Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings “firing” our partner onstage. A psychologist getting 100 founders to swap photos that make us laugh. Words that change how people interact with Claude and Replit. First-timers and veterans trading stories under redwood trees. A night of Codenames, mahjong and other games that stoked our competitive spirit.
Every two years, Reach gathers our portfolio founders, friends, and guests somewhere beautiful to recharge, reconnect, and learn from one another. Here are a few highlights from this year’s sessions:
Jason Citron (Discord) & Tade Oyerinde (Campus): Rethinking “founder mode” and why rate of learning is the one metric that outlasts every tech shift.
Reed Hastings (Netflix): The one question he asks himself about every employee, and why he’d tell kids to study philosophy.
Chelsea Larsson (Anthropic): Why writing is the most underused skill in AI product development.
Kelly McGonigal (Stanford): How joy is a muscle that can be trained, and why founders should lower their threshold for joy.
Haya Odeh (Replit): How a single word kept users from shipping, and why taste can be trained.
Carl Madi (Stepful): The importance of hiring drivers, not passengers, and matching the right leader to the right stage.
🎥 Our magical moments, captured in this highlight reel.
Team Update
Welcoming Rich to Reach

We are excited to announce that Rich Yang is joining Reach as a Venture Partner!
Those who have worked with Rich already know what he brings to the table: a rare quality to help leaders prioritize and make hard calls, paired with the empathy of someone who has made them himself. A longtime friend and partner, Rich has been mentoring our portfolio founders, serving on Boards alongside us, and helping companies navigate pivotal transitions and build strong teams.

TeachFX

Ten years ago, Jamie Poskin was a Reach intern, penning “Dear Abby” columns for education founders. The next year, he and Berk Coker started TeachFX, a pioneer in using AI to turn classroom audio into private feedback for teachers.
Today, schools and studies can attest to its effectiveness at helping educators use proven pedagogical practices that increase student talk time. Students attend class more often, improve academic performance, and feel more optimistic about their future.
We celebrate Jamie, Berk and the team as they enter their next chapter with McGraw Hill and reach even more educators and learners across the country. Congratulations!

Rosie
Finding childcare usually makes parents choose between a sitter who’s readily available, or one who knows the kids and all the peculiarities of the household. Rosie offers both, thanks to its AI Family Brain that learns each family’s routines and shares them with a bench of vetted Pros. We’re delighted to lead its Seed round alongside Bling Capital, and joined by Precursor Ventures, Mother Ventures, and a chorus of angels.
Our Partner James Kim on why we invested, and their open job opportunities.

Bloomy
We’re excited to back Bloomy, an AI-native academic system for K-12 schools that brings curriculum, teaching and assessments together to personalize instruction. Founded by Teach For America alum Alex Southmayd, Bloomy is built to make mastery learning practical — pinpointing each student’s skills gap in real time, and closing them with Socratic-style tutoring. Check out Alex’s launch post and Bloomy’s open roles.

Straia
Congratulations to Straia, which helps colleges connect siloed data and turn it into early, actionable interventions for students. At Roane State Community College, admins use it to spot students who are behind on tuition and coursework and need help. We first invested in 2025 and are excited to join this Seed round led by Speedrun. Check out their exclusive in Bloomberg.

Finally, a phone for kids that doesn’t feel childish. Freckle has launched its phone built for exploring the world, sans web browser and social media.
In a test with 2,400 students, Handshake found that the best AI tutors, from Anthropic and OpenAI, helped students improve on the GRE just as much as expert human tutors did, for less than a penny per point gained.
Marit, where 140,000 clinicians already share their salaries, has launched Community, a place where verified clinicians can connect and compare notes on pay, contracts, and careers.
Outsmart, founded by Duolingo veterans Jorge Mazal and Gina Gotthilf, has acquired a school. Formerly known as Bridges, Elmbridge is now expanding into undergraduate STEM, built around learning sciences and cognitive diversity.
More hours, mixed results: A new Preply survey of 5,000+ working professionals found that 76% spend more time learning than two years ago, but 63% feel busy without actually getting better. Call it “The Progress Gap,” where more access isn’t adding up to real-world application.
In a benchmark comparison against six other music AI models, Songscription proved the most accurate at turning audio recordings into piano sheet music.
WorkWhile has launched the NEED Index, a weekly gauge of U.S. labor shortages built on live shift data from its 1.4 million workers. Early findings: data center construction and skilled trades can’t hire fast enough.

Investing in the Machinery of Human Judgment
A home health aide walks into a patient’s house, and something seems off. Is it a minor allergic reaction, or something serious? An AI agent can know every step of a care plan, but it can’t make that call.
As AI takes on more everyday work, that kind of judgment is becoming the scarcest resource, especially in regulated work. In our latest investment thesis, Reach General Partner Esteban Sosnik argues that human judgment is about to grow an industry of its own, just as capital grew banks, payment rails and stock exchanges.
How will an agent know when to act on its own, when to delegate, and when to loop in a person? What does the org chart of a human-AI company look like? The companies that answer those questions will orchestrate how humans and AI work together.
Funding Conviction: Edtech Capital, Founder Vision & the Room in October
When anyone can build software for next to nothing, what’s still defensible? In a recent webinar with Edtech Insiders and StartEd, Reach Partner Steve Kupfer explains how that question shapes our new $265 million fund. The short answer: own what the frontier labs can’t copy, like proprietary data, deep trust and verified outcomes.
In education, there is still opportunity in areas where traditional institutions are letting people down: teachers buried in paperwork, parents stuck on months-long waitlists, superintendents wrestling with impossible budgets. Catch the full conversation with Steve, alongside Ben Nelson, Richard Weiqi Zhang, Darrin Murriner, and Alan Todd.

Voice Agent Hackathon with Take2AI & Reach Capital
November 6 at 3pm ET | New York
We’re bringing together a small group of engineers, product leaders, and sales leaders to build voice AI that doesn’t fall apart when someone interrupts, goes quiet, or veers off-script.
Take2’s engineers, who run AI phone interviews in production every day, will show how to connect speech-to-text, an LLM, and text-to-speech fast enough to feel conversational. Teams will then have three hours to build their own, with Take2 mentors on the floor.
Oh, the places we’ve gone!
In New York, Jomayra Herrera joined Tenor’s Frontier gathering to tackle the less flashy, more consequential side of workplace AI: keeping people at the center, managing adoption anxiety, and proving ROI.
In San Francisco, Caoimhe MacRunnels joined OURA, Able Partners, a16z, and J.P. Morgan at the Future of Health Summit, where one discussion connected patient trust with cost control.
In Las Vegas, James Kim returned to his Teach For America roots for its 35th Anniversary Summit. Alongside Adeel Khan, Marc Sternberg, Daniel Meekins, and Heather Y. Anichini, he explored how private and philanthropic capital can help promising education companies and organizations scale their impact.
